West Ham probe Arthur Masuaku's £6m transfer from Olympiacos last summer

West Ham signed left-back Arthur Masuaku from Olympiakos in August
Club concerned they have overpaid by almost £1million for Masuaku
Olympiacos chairman under investigation as part of a match-fixing probe

By Matt Lawton

West Ham United have launched an investigation into the £6.2million deal that saw Arthur Masuaku move to the club from Greek champions Olympiacos in the summer.

Senior club officials are concerned they have overpaid by almost £1m for the 22-year-old French left back and sent a representative to Athens last week to establish if that is the case.

West Ham are trying to ascertain whether someone has been paid who was not declared on the official transfer document.

With a mandate from chairman David Sullivan and club secretary Andrew Pincher, the investigator was charged with trying to identify who received commission for the deal as there is a fear Masuaku’s price was inflated.

It is believed the club hierarchy want to satisfy themselves that the transfer business was conducted properly at both ends of the deal.

Greek football is in chaos with the domestic championship delayed as the government tries to tackle alleged corruption. Olympiacos chairman Vangelis Marinakis is also under investigation as part of a match-fixing probe.

West Ham confirmed to Sportsmail on Monday night that they are undertaking an investigation.

I take this as a whacking great "nuffin' to with us, guv", in case there's something illegal or against the football authorities rule going on

Whilst it's a bit shoddy if a million disappeared somewhere, isn't that just what agents do anyway - take extra money from a deal for doing fuck all?

And surely we only gave them what we were willing to pay them? What they did with that money was their business?

Otherwise Leeds shoul look into when they bough Rio and ask for Harry's bonus back

Re: West Ham probe Arthur Masuaku's £6m transfer
I wondered at the time why you would bother to make this public? Given the Big Sam news, could this be stage managed house cleaning aimed at proving we're above board (now if not under him)? Would mean that they would have had a nod about what was coming?

If it is linked (big IF) - might be innocent and only in expectation of extra scrutiny given Sam's links to us and that we were the club involved in the Tevez affair.

but, having heard a few suggestions recently that our problems on the field smack of something not right behind the scenes - would be typical West Ham if the Sam stuff all adds up to something rotten and damaging for us.

I think what happened here is that we were asked and agreed to pay £6m. Then the paperwork goes into EUFA as £5m and someone got an un-recorded £1m pay-out.

Clearly not at WH's end as the inference is that WH are surprised and want the crook identified that took the £1m out of the deal...

I think if they'd got all the Olympiacos officials to stay sitting in their seats around the board room table none of this would have happened.
Obviously they were standing and someone came round twice when they were handing out the cheques.

I ALWAYS check the paperwork before I pay £6million for anything

I find this all a bit odd.

I mean, if for example Stoke offered us Walters for £85m and we paid it. Isn't that a bit like we paid what he was offered to us???

How do you over pay for a player when the clubs agree the fee?

i bet the high level inquiry is going something like this;

Tim and Dawn are going through some printouts Gareth made for the sign of 'his office', even if David told him not to make the sign.

Apparently Gareth was stupid enough to not only print out every single alternative, but also leave the prints where everyone can see them.

Tim introduces them to the camera while Dawn giggles at them: “Investigation Room” and “Investigation Office,” “Interrogation Room” and “Interrogation Office”. “He really lost it here”, Tim says as he lifts one that says: “ 'Quiet please!' Invetigation in process!”

I love how 'quiet please' is in quotation marks. It's like the sign is quoting someone. “Silence – Interrogation! That's frightening.”

The one he picked was “Investigation and Meeting Room”, which is now on the door. Tim shows us his personal favorite: “Gareth Keenan Investigates!”

I'm pretty sure it was Andrew's wife Penny who came up with the idea to investigate further.

Surely the 'senior club officials' would have ratified the documents prior to signing them off?

Due diligence is an onus on the purchaser.

West Ham representative, on arrival in Athens, - "Did we pay you too much for this player?"

Olympiacos representative - "No".

West Ham representative - "Oh ..... OK. Thanks"

Smacks of arse covering - we paid what we did but want to be seen to have done so correctly rather than possibly to expedite a deal we needed done

If you get my drift

I still think the fans will be more concerned about the pup that is the O/S Standing Fiasco.
Can they check and make sure we didn't under-pay for Payet, too, while they're at it; would be more the sort of thing the board and senior managers would get up to.
